Every year, countless animals find themselves caught in the devastating aftermath of wildfires, and this year is no different. The Eaton Fire, which has ravaged parts of California, has left many animals stranded, injured, and in desperate need of help. Watching this tragedy unfold, I knew I had to do something to help.
As an animal lover and someone who believes in the power of community, I’ve decided to dedicate 30% of the profits from my store this January to Pasadena Humane, an organization that has been working tirelessly to care for and rescue animals in need for over 100 years.
About Pasadena Humane: A Legacy of Compassion
Pasadena Humane is one of California’s most respected animal welfare organizations, founded in 1903 with a mission to foster a compassionate and humane community where animals and people live together with mutual respect. Over the decades, they’ve been at the forefront of animal rescue and protection, providing shelter, medical care, and finding homes for over 12,000 animals each year.
Their team of dedicated staff and volunteers work day and night, responding to emergencies, offering rehabilitation for injured animals, and providing education to the public about animal welfare. Pasadena Humane isn’t just about rescuing pets—it’s about creating a world where animals are cared for and respected in all walks of life.
How Pasadena Humane Is Helping Animals Affected by the Eaton Fire
As the Eaton Fire has destroyed homes, businesses, and habitats, it has left a trail of despair in its wake. The wildfire not only endangers human lives but also deeply impacts the natural world. Wild animals lose their homes and access to food and water sources, and many suffer severe injuries from the flames.
Pasadena Humane is working tirelessly to address these challenges. They’ve already taken in over 400 animals since the fire began—many of which were pets that were separated from their families during the evacuation. But their work doesn’t stop there. They’ve also been on the front lines, providing emergency care to wildlife that’s been affected by the fire. Their dedicated team is rescuing animals in need, providing medical treatment to those with injuries, and helping reunite lost pets with their families.
The work they’re doing is invaluable, but it requires substantial resources—both financial and physical. That’s why I’ve decided to donate 30% of the profits from my store throughout January to Pasadena Humane. This donation will help them continue to provide life-saving care to the animals affected by the fire.
How Fires Affect Wildlife and Their Habitats
Wildfires wreak havoc on wildlife and their habitats. Fires don’t just burn down forests and grasslands; they also destroy the delicate balance of ecosystems that animals depend on for survival. Many animals are forced to flee their homes, and those that can’t escape often suffer from burns, smoke inhalation, or worse.
For wildlife, the fire’s effects are long-lasting. After the flames have gone out, the environment remains inhospitable. Food sources are scarce, water sources may be contaminated, and shelter is destroyed. For many species, this means a struggle for survival in the aftermath of the fire.
In addition to the immediate dangers of the fire itself, wildfires often bring about a series of secondary impacts. These include flooding, landslides, and a loss of biodiversity. It’s heartbreaking to think of all the animals that are left to deal with the aftereffects of a fire, with so many losing their homes and lives in the process.
But organizations like Pasadena Humane are the shining light in these dark times. Their swift response and compassion help to alleviate the suffering of these animals and offer them a chance at a second life.
How You Can Help
By purchasing from my store this month, you’re not only getting something beautiful but also helping make a real difference in the lives of animals in desperate need. 30% of the profits will go directly to Pasadena Humane to support their ongoing efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals affected by the fire. Every little bit counts and can help provide a safe haven for these innocent creatures.
If you prefer, you can also donate directly to Pasadena Humane.
Together, we can show that kindness, compassion, and love for animals make the world a better place. Every dollar you spend or donate helps Pasadena Humane continue their incredible work in the face of disaster.
Thank you for your generosity, your love for animals, and for being a part of this special mission. Let’s work together to help heal the lives of those affected by the Eaton Fire.
Other You Can Help Wildlife During and After the Fire (if you are near an affected area and can help)
Wildfires can leave many animals desperate for food and water, and with so much of their habitat destroyed, it’s up to us to offer a helping hand. Even if you aren’t able to physically rescue animals, there are many ways you can assist from home. Here are a few things you can do to support wildlife in your area:
1. Leave Water Out for Wildlife
One of the easiest ways to help is by leaving clean, fresh water out in your yard for wildlife. Animals are often dehydrated and searching for water, especially in areas where natural water sources have been destroyed by fire. Make sure the water is placed in shallow, wide containers that animals can access safely. Refill the containers throughout the day, especially in hot weather.
2. Create Safe Spaces
If you have the space, consider leaving undisturbed areas of your yard where animals can find shelter. Long grass, fallen branches, and shrubs can provide vital hiding spots for small mammals, birds, and insects trying to escape the heat and smoke.
3. Provide Food for Birds and Small Animals
Many wild animals rely on foraging for food, but fires can leave them without access to natural food sources. If you live in an area impacted by fire, you can help by providing bird seed or setting up a wildlife-friendly feeder. Keep in mind, though, that the food provided should be appropriate for the local wildlife species and should not encourage larger predators like coyotes or mountain lions.
4. Avoid Using Pesticides or Poisons
In times of distress, it’s especially important to avoid using harmful pesticides, poisons, or chemical repellents. These can inadvertently harm or poison wildlife, particularly when their natural habitats are already compromised.
5. Report Injured or Displaced Animals
If you see an injured or displaced animal, it’s important to contact local wildlife rescue organizations, like Pasadena Humane, that have the resources and knowledge to provide the proper care. Don’t try to handle wild animals yourself unless you’re trained to do so, as they may be frightened or injured and could cause harm.
6. Spread the Word
Many people may not be aware of how wildfires affect local wildlife, or how easy it is to help. Sharing information and encouraging others to take small actions can have a big impact. By spreading awareness, you can help ensure that more people are doing their part to support wildlife during this challenging time.
If you’re looking for additional ways to help, Pasadena Humane is always in need of donations, supplies, and volunteers, so consider supporting them directly as well. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of the animals that are affected by the fire.
